Our ELA class has been enjoying an informational story about the Why is the Statue of Liberty Green. As we read, students worked hard to notice how text features help readers understand nonfiction texts.
We explored headings to learn what each section would be about, looked closely at illustrations and photographs to picture important details, and read captions to learn more about what the images show. Students also spotted bold vocabulary words and used context clues and discussion to understand new words like symbol, immigrant, and freedom.
It was wonderful to see students engaging in conversations, pointing things out on the page, and realizing that text features are tools readers can use to make meaning—not just decorations. They were proud to show off their learning!
