Knox Central Social Studies 1 Students travel back in time to appreciate art that is more than just vintage. Social Studies 1 students travel back in time…Well, that might be a wee bit of a stretch. Truthfully, they did travel around the room stopping at examples of art from the Byzantine period. Their mission? To analyze the type of work of art each example represents and apply its importance to the time period.
Each station includes the following: 1. Knowledge of the workings of nature were preserved with words and images. 2. Use of religious imagery in the Byzantine Empire for items that in other societies were strictly secular 3. Key characteristic of Byzantine churches in the early years of the empire, beginning in the fourth century 4.Byzantine art created by pressing colored chips of glass or other material into mortar or plaster 5. After the secret of its creation was stolen, it was used to differentiate various ranks of Byzantine officials 6. Small images to be used by Byzantine citizens in private as reminders of spiritual realities
As you can see, everything from silk to coins to mosaic were examined. Moving and grooving and making applications around the room. Art that meant something to the people of its time. That certainly makes it more than vintage.
