Student-led Inquiry

In 5th grade Social Studies, students at Wrigley Elementary are learning about events that led up to the American Revolution. In studying the French and Indian War, Mrs. Lewis and her students embedded several strategies learned through KEDC grants. Students used an OER Project graphic organizer to analyze sources related to the French and Indian War. Students were put into “think tanks” (table groups) to analyze, source, and pull evidence from one source. Each table group had a different source. Then, students taught that source to the entire class. Here, Madi Ratliff teaches her classmates about the French and Indian War, using a map, noting the differences before and after the war.

Check out her drumstick that she’s presenting with! These were also a gift from KEDC during a summer conference. In Social Studies, they have been used as pointers, “talking sticks” during discussion and debate, and even to write on the Quomo board!

Bonus: This lesson was observed by administration at the school and district level, with high marks, because it was student led!
