This week, our second-grade classroom was filled with thoughtful conversations as we learned about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students explored who Dr. King was and why he is remembered as an important leader who believed in kindness, fairness, courage, and peaceful change. Through engaging read-alouds and class discussions, students learned how Dr. King used his words and actions to help make the world a better place for everyone.
Students participated in a hands-on activity where they shared ways they can follow Dr. King’s example in their own lives. They created drawings and writing pieces showing how they can be kind to others, treat everyone fairly, and stand up for what is right at school and in their community. The creativity and thoughtfulness they showed were wonderful to see!
This lesson supports Kentucky Academic Standards in Social Studies by helping students understand the importance of historical figures and civic responsibility, as well as English Language Arts standards through reading informational texts, participating in discussions, and expressing ideas through writing and illustrations. Most importantly, students learned that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
We are so proud of our second graders for their positive attitudes, meaningful reflections, and growing understanding of how they can help make the world a better place—just like Dr. King dreamed!
