Balloons Over Northern Parade Brings Learning to Life at Northern Elementary
Northern Elementary recently hosted its annual Balloons Over Northern Parade, a beloved tradition led by our kindergarten and first grade classes. This event transforms our hallways into a celebration of creativity, history, and hands-on learning — and this year was no exception!
In the weeks leading up to the parade, students learned about the rich history behind the iconic balloons featured in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They explored how the famous balloons are designed, engineered, and brought to life each year, gaining an appreciation for the artistry and teamwork behind this long-standing American tradition.
Drawing inspiration from what they learned, students then created their very own parade balloons. With imagination as their guide, they designed and crafted colorful balloon characters, which they proudly carried as they marched through the school during the Balloons Over Northern Parade.
To add even more excitement to the day, teachers joined the fun by wearing inflatable animal costumes. Their festive attire helped create a joyful, high-energy environment that made the parade feel magical for everyone involved.
To extend the learning beyond the classroom, students were encouraged to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade at home on Thanksgiving morning. Families were invited to send in photos of their children excitedly watching the real parade, helping students make meaningful connections between classroom learning and a real-life historical event that occurs every year.
This year’s Balloons Over Northern Parade was a wonderful reminder of the power of hands-on learning, creativity, and community. We are so proud of our young learners and grateful to our families for supporting this special tradition!
