What began as an inspiring email from Wendy King at the start of December—challenging us to find “Wicked-inspired” acts of kindness—blossomed into a full-scale mission for our first-grade classrooms.
To bring the world of Oz to life for our youngest learners, we used a blend of AI-assisted lesson planning and creative design. Our “firsties” didn’t just learn about the characters; they lived out their best traits. They dove deep into the themes of Glinda’s kindness and Elphaba’s bravery, becoming “Sparkle-Sharers” who lifted others up and “Reindeer Defenders” who courageously protected our shared classroom community.
The true highlight of the mission was seeing this heart-work transform into artwork. We channeled our lessons into the school-wide door decorating competition, covering our entrance with student writing from Canva and “Oz-Wise” kindness maps. Our door did more than just look festive; it told a powerful story of inclusion, empathy, and community.
We are thrilled to announce that our First Grade team won the school-wide decorating contest! Even more rewarding was watching our “Littles” practice intentional kindness during the busiest, most hectic time of the year. Thank you, Wendy, for being the springboard for this project. You helped us show our students that while being “popular” is nice, being kind and brave is how you truly Defy Gravity.
