KEDC Receives Federal Grant to Launch “America’s Promise: 250” Civics Education Initiative

Ashland, KY (October 2025) — The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC) is proud to announce it has been awarded a federal grant through the American History and Civics Education program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will fund a new project titled America’s Promise: 250, designed to strengthen civics and history education across rural Kentucky.

This effort comes at a meaningful time, as the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026. The America’s Promise project will provide high-quality professional learning for teachers, helping them bring the country’s founding documents—like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights—into the classroom in engaging and meaningful ways. The focus is especially on supporting rural educators with practical strategies and resources that make civics come alive for students.

“We’re honored to receive this grant and lead such an important effort,” said Nancy Hutchinson, CEO of KEDC. “Civics education matters. Every student, no matter where they live, deserves the chance to learn how our country was built and how they can play a role in its future.”

America’s Promise: 250 will include:

  • Professional development for teachers focused on civics, U.S. history, and government.
  • Use of primary sources and real historical documents in classrooms.
  • Interactive learning such as historical simulations and mock hearings.
  • Service learning opportunities that connect civic education to local communities.
